About the wines

sassy wines our wines 03

Sassy Wines is a small (6.2h) family owned and operated vineyard in Orange, NSW. The property was bought in 2004 and planted in 2005. Sassy Wines produces single-vineyard, cool climate wines, grown and made with care and consideration for each grape variety to express their full potential.Sassy is one of the newer, although not the smallest vineyards in the Orange region. Rob and Felicia Coles are passionate about all things wine. Rob is the viticulturist and manager of the small onsite winery. Felicia runs the cellar door and markets Sassy Wines.

The Winemakers

Sassy's winemaker is the well respected Peter Logan, of Logan Wines in Mudgee. Together we taste and discuss the new vintage during the winemaking to decide on the style and direction of each wine. Peter also sources our grapes for the Logan Family Wine business. Rob takes over the red wines whilst in barrels in the small winery at the vineyard.

The Wines

Production is small at 130 dozen of each of the 7 wines produced annually.

Our first wines produced were the Pinot Noir 2010 and Shiraz 2010. The Pinot Noir 2010 did us proud by winning 5 stars in the Winestate Magazine May 2014 which put us on the map, so to speak.

Our signature wine is Arneis, an Italian white grape variety from Piedmont, NW Italy. Available now is the Arneis 2013, The Special Release "The Ivor" 2015 and a low alcohol Late Harvest Arneis 2015 dessert wine. We plan to produce a sparkling Spumante style bubbly Arneis in 2016, thus completing the range from bubbles to dessert wine.

Arneis, it is an ancient white grape variety which was mentioned in 15th century documents. However, recession in France and a depopulation within Italy between World War 1 and 2, reduced it presence to 2 vineyards only. Fortunately two vineyard owners in the Alba region of Piedmont recognised the near loss of this variety and set about replanting to sustainable levels. Luckily for the wine drinking commmunity, Arneis survived. The name Arneis means "little rascals, awkward, unreliable and short tempered personality". Actually, we have found it to be quite compliant.

Other wines produced are Shiraz, Pinot Noir, Petit Verdot (sourced from our original vineyard in Cowra) Pinot Gris, Riesling and a Pinot Noir Rosé. All these wines have won 2015 wine show medals. The Arneis 2015 "The Ivor" was scored 90/100 by  James Halliday in July 2016 and was selected in his Best Value Wines dozen under $25. Concrete Playground, an online food wine restaurant event information site rated Sassy cellar door among the top ten in NSW.

Sassy Wine's label has evolved with a new, more out there, more "sassy" look for the 2015 vintages.

Our wines are available through the cellar door, online, selected restaurants and liquor outlets in the Orange district and the Blue Mountains.
