Grape Observer - Pinot Noir 2010

Fruit Forward: Sassy Pinot Noir 2010
"Sassy's pinot noir, from the Orange district, resembles the classic Australian fruit forward version of pinot noir. Almost opaque in colour, it opens to vibrant cherries and strawberries on the nose."

Sassy 2010 The Ivor Arneis

Sassy 2010 The Ivor Arneis, $20 -Inn 7
This comes from a new Orange area
venture owned by former Cowra
vignerons Rob and Fliss Coles. It is light gold, with
honeysuckle aromas. The front palate has a crisp pear
flavour and quince, lemon zest and mineral characters
chime in on the middle palate. Flinty acid refreshes at the
finish. Get it on

Sassy vineyard, Orange, NSW
$30 ***
In 2005 Fliss and Rob Coles moved uphill from Cowra
to Orange's brisker climate establishing a vineyard,
including three clones of Pinot Noir, at an elevation
of 900 metres. Their first Pinot Noir, a light to medium-bodied
style made by neighbour Peter Logan, delivers
vibrant, delicate pinot aromas and flavours. Fine
tannins give it a gently dry, savoury finish. It's a well made
wine with lovely fruit one to watch in future
as the vines age, delivering deeper, more complex

Campbell Mattinson The Wine Front

SASSY Pinot Noir 2010
"Finding good pinot in New South Wales - or indeed, north of the Macedon Ranges - is never an easy task.

This is a welcoming, generous style. Sweet spice, sweety oak, sweet-sour cherries and a grainy, earthen, spicy finish. The core is quite sweet, but fruity, well managed tannin keeps it tidy. It didn't jump out at me but it didn't turn me off either. It carries a couple of bronze medals and I'd reckon that's about right." ..... Campbell Mattinson The Wine Front

Sample something local or full-bodied and a little cheeky

Sassy Pinot Noir 2010
$30 –
HMM, we're always a bit dubious about labels that have a schtick or gimmick.
Not sure why, as we've been pleasantly surprised more than once by wines with such labels wrapped around them. And here's example.
Sassy is one of the Orange region's newest vignerons with 6.2ha of vineyards planted in 2005. Admirably, organic and biodynamic principles are used in the vineyard. The single-vineyard pinot noir grapes were fermented in open fermenters with hand plunging in order to build palate weight and flavour and then matured in new and older French oak for eight months, they tell us.
