Sample something local or full-bodied and a little cheeky

Sassy Pinot Noir 2010
$30 – sassywines.com.au
HMM, we're always a bit dubious about labels that have a schtick or gimmick.
Not sure why, as we've been pleasantly surprised more than once by wines with such labels wrapped around them. And here's example.
Sassy is one of the Orange region's newest vignerons with 6.2ha of vineyards planted in 2005. Admirably, organic and biodynamic principles are used in the vineyard. The single-vineyard pinot noir grapes were fermented in open fermenters with hand plunging in order to build palate weight and flavour and then matured in new and older French oak for eight months, they tell us.

Very good, what's it taste like? Bloody nice, actually. There's a handmade feel about this wine, which we're proud to say we decided on before we'd read about Sassy, a taste we've enjoyed before with organic wines from smaller operations. A slight spritz, it's a light ruby in colour with a fruity, lush mouthfeel, rhubard and cherries on the palate and a lovely soft, but not wimpy, finish.
We can't say pinot noirs are out fav reds but really enjoyed this one thanks to a complexity that made us think about what we were drinking.
Top marks to Sassy's Fliss and Rob Cole.
